The Ethics of AI Art

AI is just a tool. Just like hairpins.

Some people use hairpins to pick locks but owning or wearing hairpins doesn’t automatically turn people into potential burglars.

AI can imitate artists, but it can also bring objects, places, and people that only exist in your imaginations into visual forms. Obviously, I’m talking about AI apps that allow people to chose what to include or not include in their compositions, not apps that mainly automate images (e.g. Lensa).

Many creative professionals include other people’s works in their moodboards every day. They can blend multiple ideas and give those ideas their own twists; or, they can copy things in their moodboards without making significant modifications.

There are ways to use AI ethically. People can use their own ideas and refrain from asking the apps they use to imitate other people’s work. It’s not an impossibility. You can paint scenes with carefully chosen words and AI apps like MidJourney can transmute your words into images. Prompting the app to imitate other people’s work is a choice, not a requirement.
