In World War II era, medical educators used Moulage Kit to help train medical personnel to deal with injuries in the field. Actors would strap them on and act out various injuries. EMTs need to learn to cope with emotional shock of treating trauma as much as they need to know how to treat injuries. This training practice is still used today.
“This was another fun project born from a peculiar resource – an intact military-issue moulage kit. The kit was designed to mimic various injuries in mass-casualty field training exercises. A friend who owns a local prop house and scenery shop obtained it for his personal collection, but insisted we could borrow it for a shoot. Our narrative sees a young dilettante shut-in who has used these various wounds to serve as proxies for her past emotional injuries. To add a layer of meaning to the pieces, the codes and numbers used to signify important events are directly drawn from Stacey and Jason’s past.”
