Virtuogenix S/S 2019: Interview with Miho Hirano (Excerpts)

When did you know you wanted to become a painter?

In the beginning, I did not plan on becoming a painter, but ever since I was a child I always like to paint. As I continued to draw and paint, I believe that this is the one thing I am good at. And so, I started to wish to become a painter.

どんなきっかけがあって専業アーティストなりたいと思いましたか。

最初は画家を目指ざしていたわけでは無かったのですが、絵を描く事が幼いころから好きだったので絵を描き続けて行くうちに私の取り柄は絵を描く事しかないと思いこのまま画家になれたらいいなと淡い期待を抱くようになりました。

What advice would you give to artists who are having a hard time finding their own style?

I had a hard time finding the kind of paintings I wanted to create too. I used to sit in front of a canvas and did not know what to do. I overcame that problem by incorporating the things I’m familiar with – in my case plants and animals from my past memories and newer experiences – into my paintings.

自分らしい絵画やスタイルを見つけようと悩んでいるアーティストに何かアドバイスはありますか。

私も自分の描きたい絵が見つからずかなり苦悩しました。キャンバスを目の前にしてもどうしたらいいのかわからないのです。私の場合、自分の過去の思い出や経験を頼りに身近に感じていた植物や動物をモチーフに扱いだしたら無理なく筆が進むようになってきました。

Unlike most other oil paintings, your paintings look softer, smoother, more multi-layered and more delicate. How did you come up with this unique painting style?

When I was a child, I used to color my illustrations with markers. Because of that habit, I am unable to apply thick layers of colors. But, later on, I came up with the idea of applying thin layers of oil paints and turn it into my strength/uniqueness. Even though I
can only paint thin layers of paint, I don’t want my painting to look too thin/sheer; so I apply many layers of paints to give the painting more depth.

多くの油絵の画家の方々と違い、美穂さんの絵はソフトなタッチで、スムーズであり何層にも色が重ねられ、繊細な作品です。この技術はどのようにして発展させましたか。

子供の頃はイラストをマーカーで着彩していたのでそのなごりで油絵でも厚塗りをする事がどうしてもできず悩みだったのですが、いつからか逆に薄塗りを強みに出来ないかと思うようになりました。薄塗りだけど近くで見ても薄っぺらに見えないような厚みを出したいので層を重ねています。

Why do you choose to paint using oil paints? Why do you prefer oil paints over other type of paints instead of acrylic or watercolor?

I happened to major in oil painting in high school. I thought I was pretty good at painting but I had a hard time using oil painting to express my ideas. For the first time, I felt frustrated and it made me want to overcome that problem. I continued to paint using
oil paints but I was unable to get accustomed to it. I thought perhaps acrylic painting is more suitable for me but I couldn’t stop trying to overcome my shortcoming. But, as I continued to use oil paints, I discovered that – as I imagined – my painting speed
matches well with how slowly oil paints flow and dry on canvas. That is the reason I continue to paint using oil paints. Perhaps, I’ve acquired a deeper understanding in how paint using oil paints.

油絵で絵を描かれる理由はなぜですか？なぜアクリル画や水彩画より油絵を好んで使われるのですか。

たまたま高校生の時に油彩を専攻する事になり画力にはそこそこ自信があったのですがあまりの絵の具の扱いにくさに表現力が伴わずそこで初めて挫折を味わいました。この挫折が悔しくて描き続ける事になったのですがなかなか慣れずアクリル画の方が合っているのではと思う事もあったのですが半分意地で描き続けていました。描きつづけていくうちに絵の具の緩やかに乾きのびのびと塗り広げられる感じが自分の想像しながら着色するペースと合っている事に気づいたので今も変わらずに油絵を描いています。油絵具との付き合い方がわかってきたのかもしれません。
